Sidewalk Repair

Saving...

Residents are responsible for repairing the sidewalk in front of their homes. Public Works will investigate damage to curbs and sidewalks and address any immediate hazards (such as exposed rebar). The department will also conduct investigations to determine if the issue impacts an ADA infrastructure at Street intersections. The department will conduct the initial investigation within 10 working days.

The City also has a Sidewalk Rebate Program to assist property owners with the costs of repairing sidewalks.  Property owners may be eligible for assistance up to 70% of the City’s pro-rated costs for repair, with a maximum of $3,000.

Why do I have to repair a City sidewalk? Isn’t that the City’s responsibility?

BY LAW, property owners in the San Antonio City Limits are responsible for repairing and maintaining any sidewalks adjoining their properties.
Code of Ordinances, City of San Antonio, Sec. 29-11:
Maintenance of sidewalks, parkways, curbs and driveways by abutting owners (b) It shall be the duty of the owner of abutting property or any special user, upon receipt of written notification by the director of public works or any of his subordinates, of any defects or dangerous condition of any unsafe and dangerous defect in any sidewalk, curb, gutter, parkway or driveway to repair the same and put it in a safe condition, free from defect and hazard, within thirty (30) days from date of receipt of such notice.
