As of January 1, 2022, a new Texas law went into effect, which states that disabled veteran’s license plates, referred to as DV plates, were no longer accepted, by themselves, for legally parking in accessible parking spaces.
The new law requires that anyone parking in an accessible parking space must have a license plate or placard (red or blue) that features the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA). Texans with disabled veteran (DV) license plates wishing to use an accessible parking space may apply for a disabled parking placard or a new DV license plate featuring the ISA at their local county tax-accessor office. Currently issued disabled parking placards will remain valid; but eligibility requirements must be met at time of renewal. For more information, please visit the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Disabled Parking, Placards & Plates at https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/disabled-parking-placards-plates.
At this time only warnings will be issued, however effective July 1, 2022 citations will be issued to any vehicle not displaying the International Symbol of Access on their license plate or placard when parked in an accessible parking space.
To appeal a parking citation, please see the appeal process at the Municipal Courts website: https://www.sanantonio.gov/Court.
