Disposing of Old License Plates: If you do not want to keep your old license plates as a souvenir or craft project (e.g. to make a birdhouse roof), you may surrender them to your local county tax office or nearest TxDMV Regional Service Center for proper recycling. Locate your local office here. Should you choose to dispose of them yourself, simply write “VOID” across them in a permanent marker or cut them with tin shears before placing them in your garbage container. This will assure no one can steal them and fraudulently use them on another vehicle. Unfortunately, license plates are not accepted in the blue recycle containers.
