Animal Care Services conducts investigations into reported non-critical or critical bites to determine quarantine requirements for biting animals as the Rabies Control Authority for Bexar County. Animal Care Services has a commitment to investigate every documented bite incident to ensure compliance with Texas State Law as it pertains to rabies control. This includes initial investigation of each bite reported to include documented verification of the bite, statements from victim(s)/witnesses and verification of state required rabies vaccinations. Verified bites will be forwarded to Bites Investigators to determine if quarantine is required and type of quarantine the animal qualifies for. Animals requiring quarantine will be required to be quarantined for 240 hours from the date of bite. Depending on a critical or non-critical report, the initial response for this service request type is either 3 hours or 3 days.
